A Day in Mexico

Updated: May 5

Tulum, Mexico, is a tropical paradise known for its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and rich cultural heritage. Our weekend getaway with NYU created lasting memories, and Day 1 was particularly full of excitement and exploration. From exquisite dining options to relaxing beach escapades and nightlife adventures, Tulum has something for everyone. Here’s a glimpse into our first day's itinerary filled with hidden gems.

Arrival and Accommodation

Upon our arrival in Tulum, we checked into Hotel Bardo, a chic boutique hotel that beautifully blends modern luxury with rustic charm. The serene, inviting environment provided a peaceful retreat after our long travel day.

The hotel offers rooms designed with elegance, alongside an infinity pool that overlooks lush tropical gardens. A complimentary breakfast featuring organic ingredients fueled us for Day 1, allowing us to start off right.

Breakfast at Manglar Pizzeria

Fueled with excitement, our first stop was Manglar Pizzeria for breakfast. This laid-back venue, with rustic decor, truly encapsulated Tulum's essence. We indulged in delightful breakfast pizzas topped with fresh, local ingredients, while the banana pancakes stood out—soft, fluffy, and drizzled with honey.

This cozy spot is perfect for a casual yet fulfilling start, with the friendly staff making us feel right at home.

Morning at Playa Paraiso

After breakfast, we headed to Playa Paraiso, one of the most beautiful beaches in Tulum. Known for its soft, white sand and turquoise waters, this beach offered the ideal playground for sunbathing and swimming.

Laid-back beach bars lined the shore, offering refreshing cocktails and tasty snacks. We rented a few sun loungers for about $10 each and enjoyed the sunshine, soaking in the breathtaking views. With over 80% of visitors rating this as a top beach destination, it’s no surprise that Playa Paraiso is a favorite among travelers.

Lunch at Sale e Pepe

When hunger struck again, we made our way to Sale e Pepe, an Italian gem that came highly recommended. The outdoor seating allowed us to enjoy our meal surrounded by vibrant greenery. We enjoyed homemade pasta dishes that burst with flavor, accompanied by a selection of local wines. Their signature Tiramisu, praised by over 90% of customers, left us craving more.

The combination of fantastic food and a relaxed atmosphere made it a great spot for a leisurely lunch.

Exploring Tulum Ruins

No trip to Tulum is complete without visiting the iconic Tulum Ruins. This ancient Mayan city, perched on cliffs overlooking the Caribbean, is a must-see for any visitor. We explored the stunning archaeological site, walking through ancient structures and diving into the rich history that unfolded before us.

The picturesque backdrop made for some unforgettable group photos, as we stood where ancient Mayans once thrived.

Relaxing at Las Palmas Beach

Next, we took a quick taxi to Las Palmas Beach, a hidden gem known for its serene environment and lighter crowd. This beach gave us the much-needed relaxation we craved after a day filled with exploration. We played beach volleyball, swam in the gentle waves, and basked in the sun-drenched beauty of Tulum.

The tranquil atmosphere, marked by swaying palm trees, made it an oasis away from the busier beaches.

Dinner at Hartwood

As the sun began to set, we made reservations at Hartwood, one of Tulum's hottest restaurants. Famous for its farm-to-table philosophy, the venue showcases local ingredients in innovative and flavorful ways.

Seated under the stars, we savored a mixed seafood platter alongside their charcoal-grilled specialties. The vibrant ambiance complemented the lively discussions as we toasted to a day filled with exploration and laughter.

Night at Papaya Playa Project

To kick off our nightlife experience, we headed to Papaya Playa Project, a renowned beach club famous for its electric atmosphere. Live DJs created an exciting environment as the beats mixed with the sound of crashing waves.

Dancing with friends under the stars was the perfect way to end our first day in Tulum. The club's energetic vibe left us eager for more fun in the days ahead.

Tulum is truly a hidden gem, bursting with spectacular experiences at every turn. From our delightful breakfast at Manglar Pizzeria to the enchanting vibe at Papaya Playa Project, Day 1 was filled with amazing food, breathtaking views, and strong friendships. As we settled into our hotel room that night, anticipation began to build for the adventures that awaited us on Day 2.
